Each holiday season we find ourselves remembering the magic of our youth during this time of year. We sometimes feel that we have lost something over time. Remember the joy of being a child? We looked at life with wonder. Think back to those fond memories of the past and the joy that comes from being gathered with the people that you love. Nothing is quite as indelibly fixed in ourselves as those cherished memories.
Somewhere along the way we all tend to lose that outlook. We replace wonder with skepticism and joy with pragmatism. When did practicality overtake imagination? It certainly didn't happen overnight. It happens gradually as we grow and take on responsibilities. Like a favorite old baseball glove or board game that we store away in the back of the closet, joy and wonder are pushed aside to make room for those responsibilities. "Life happens"
and then we forget that we stored them away in the first place. Perhaps we even remember that they are there and mean to bring them out but never do. We stop playing and move on. We condition ourselves to protect our vulnerabilities and become cautious. Our paradigm shifts from "living" to "surviving".
The holiday season is a special time to surround yourself with your loved ones. Take solace and comfort from them. Let them be your stronghold and you a part of theirs. We all need to be practical and cautious of danger but we must also make room again for joy and wonder. Why not dig through the closet, dust off that glove and board game and begin to live again? Don't worry; life will let you make room for them.
